D. Travers Scott is an author and educator interested in the communication of identities, particularly related to gender/sexuality, health, and technology.

He has authored five books, (co)edited three, and published over 150 short pieces. A cultural producer and analyst, he began publishing fiction and journalism in 1989, and scholarly writing in 1997.

Seeing the marginal outlets of outsider voices as equally important to authoritative sources, he has published in forums ranging from underground ‘zines to academic journals. For 13 years he worked full-time in advertising, for clients such as AT&T Wireless, Netflix, and Microsoft. This supported his creative work as a writer and performance artist, appearing in the USA, Canada, and Australia, with his work profiled in Harper’s magazine and This American Life. Currently he is Associate Professor of Communication at Clemson University. His degrees include:

“Everything I do is about communication,” Scott says. “Advertising, arts, education, technologies, politics, and activism are all ways that human beings strive to connect with one another. The communion and community of communication, and its role in trying to make a better world, are central to my work across varied fields and forms.”

Media covering Scott’s scholarly and creative works include This American Life, Village Voice, Harper’s, International Journal of Communication, QED: A Journal of LGBTQ Worldmaking, Herizons, Gay & Lesbian Review, Critical Lede, Media Science, New York Post, Salon, Utne Reader, Seattle Times, Sydney Star Observer, The Guardian, Reference and Research Book News, Melbourne Star Observer, Library Journal, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Weekly, Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Oregonian, Metrosource, Advocate, Out, Genre, Instinct, San Francisco Gate, and Publishers Weekly.
